LASIK Surgery Clinic
More LASIK eye surgery is performed across the world with each passing year. From the time the procedure was first FDA-approved in the late nineties to today, over 19 million people have benefited from laser eye surgery. The popularity of LASIK is on the rise and chances are good that you already know of someone who has invested in LASIK and is happy with the results. If you’ve thought about getting LASIK for yourself, you probably want to know more about it.
LASIK is an acronym for Laser Assisted In-situ Keratomileusis. It is a procedure to make one independent of the use of corrective glasses/contact Lenses. Here the cornea is reshaped so that light focuses on the retina without the aid of glasses. There are two steps in the LASIK procedure.First,a microthin flap is created and lifted to open up the surface of the cornea for the second step. It is the second step where the actual vision enhancing treatment (also called tissue ablation/reshaping) occurs by an computer guided excimer laser..The thin corneal flap is replaced and the healing process starts.
The first step is done either by an ultrathin blade called the microkeratome (regular/Blade LASIK) or with laser (Blade Free LASIK/ Bladeless LASIK)
BLADE -LESS (Blade -FREE) LASIK
The Femto Second Laser introduced the concept of Blade -Free LASIK, thereby refining the first step.It has made the procedure more safe, more comfortable, more precise..hence,more predictable and saves more tissue. Its hence that the visual results are significantly better. In the USA,more than 25 percent of all LASIK procedures are done by this technique.
NASA has approved Blade-free LASIK for the correction of refractive errors.
The Medical Director is involved with the selection, assessment and management of all clients who would want to undergo the procedure.LASIK is conducted at an associate center by the Medical Director herself.
All other Refractive Surgical Procedures like Refractive Lens Exchange and PRELEX,ICL etc will be conducted at the Center itself. The Center, however, also has a long term proposal for acquiring a LASIK facility.
The LASIK is done on the AMARIS 500Hz Excimer Laser,
BLADE-free LASIK is done with the FEMTO LASER Z4.
We offer our patients the latest in IOL technology ,the lenses range from monofocal aspheric aberration corrected lenses to the multifocal IOLs, the astigmatism correcting Toric IOLs and the latest EDoF (extended Depth of focus) IOLs and the TRIFOCAL IOLs. We offer the latest generation astigmatism correcting Toric IOLS across all platforms, as an option in correcting refractive errors. For precision and to minimize calculation errors in the implanted IOLs we use the optical biometers with advanced calculators.
PRESBYMAX is the latest treatment for the correction of presbyopia.Presbyopia is the age related blurring of near vision after the age of 40 years.Earlier correction of distance and near vision was a challenge but now with the introduction of PRESBYMAX,it has become easier to correct near, intermediate and near vision with a high quality.
PRESBYMAX is a good option for patients who have undergone LASIK earlier or for those who have undergone cataract surgery and have monofocal lenses and now aspire for glass free near vision too.
THE LASIK PROCEDURE
The Procedure has three basic steps.
1.Creation of the corneal flap
2.Tissue ablation/Reshaping
3.Repositioning of the flap.
STEP ONE: Creation of the flap
The conventional LASIK with Blade and the Bladeless Technique differ at this step.
The conventional technique requires a micro Keratome (a Blade) to make a flap.while the Bladeless technique uses another Laser( Femto Second) Laser to cut across the corneal tissue to create a thin flap.
The Blade cuts from outside in while the laser cuts from inside out.
Flap with Femto second LASER
Its an “inside-out” process, wherein the Femto second Laser is precisely focused to a point within the cornea, where thousands of microscopic bubbles are formed. This defines the architecture and precisely at what point to separate. The microbubbles join together within the cornea and a flap is created at a predetermined site and depth.
The diameter, depth or thickness, the width of the flap, the architecture of the side cut of the flap, the hinge of the flap where it remains attached to the cornea, are various parameters that can be customized as per the requirement of the individual patient and can be controlled by the surgeon. The edge is created from within outwards to reach the corneal surface. This completes the step one of creating a flap.
STEP TWO: Tissue Ablation
The LASIK surgeon then lifts the flap, exposes the corneal bed and treats it with excimer laser. The flap with the beveled and precise edge,
STEP THREE: Repositioning the Flap
The Flap is then repositioned to fit snugly back in its place. This reforms the entire cornea and thus completes the LASIK procedure
FAQ’s
Q: What is LASIK?
A: LASIK is an acronym for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis. This phrase refers to the process of creating a flap in the cornea ,reshaping the corneal bed exposed (computer guided to remove your glass number),and repositioning the flap.
Q: How do I know if I’m a candidate for LASIK?
A: To determine if you’re a good candidate for a LASIK procedure, start by talking to your eye doctor. A consultation is a must along with multiple examinations to decide to do a LASIK procdure
What can LASIK Treat?
Laser eye surgery can be used to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
What is the minimum age to undergo LASIK?
You must be at least 18 years of age to undergo LASIK; however, because vision can change more often at young ages, most patients will not be FIT for LASIK until they are at least 21+ years of age. Your glass prescription should ideally have been stable (meaning, your prescription has not changed) within the previous year.
When can I be unfit for a LASIK?
In general, you and your eyes should be healthy before considering LASIK.A changing eye glass prescription, an eye infection or glaucoma, would make u not a good candidate for LASIK. If you have an autoimmune disease or other health issues that would affect the healing process, you also may not be a good candidate.
IF I am UNFIT for LASIK will I never be glass free?
A: There are various procedures for Laser correction of Glasses. All These will be evaluated by your eye surgeon and the best fit procedure will be advised for you.
If you are unfit for a Laser procedure there are other surgical options too that need a discussion with your eye surgeon.
Will a LASIK procedure hurt?
Anytime you contemplate a surgical procedure, it is normal to worry that it might hurt. The good news is that LASIK eye surgery is a fairly painless procedure, as drops are used to numb the eyes. Some patients report feeling some pressure during the surgery.
How long is the recovery period?
The LASIK procedure will not take long, and you will be able to go home the same day. Most patients will experience clearer vision after the first 24 hours, and their vision can continue to improve for up to 3-6 months as the rest of the healing process occurs.
For the first day after surgery, you should rest your eyes and be sure to avoid strenuous activity. Most patients can typically resume their normal activities the following day. In the first week, some patients experience side-effects such as tearing up, light sensitivity, halos, and puffy eyelids. These should naturally subside.
Your LASIK specialist will be able to create a recovery plan with you and advise you on what to expect based on your vision correction surgery.
Does LASIK last?
Many people wonder if LASIK will last forever, or they worry they will need a repeat procedure in the future. LASIK eye surgery corrects your vision prescription at the time of the procedure. However, this does not mean that your eyes will not continue to change. As we age, our eyes age too. If you have your nearsightedness treated with laser eye surgery, your nearsightedness may still continue to advance in degree, leading you to eventually consider having a follow up procedure (called an enhancement). It’s important to continue your annual eye exams to stay on top of your prescription and evaluate any changes to it.
How do the Bladeless and Conventional LASIK with Blade Differ?
A: It differs at the step one of the procedure. But this is a very important step. The size and thickness and precision of the flap is decided at this step and the Femto LASIK flap is definitely a superior flap.
